They can seem a little unnecessary. Like you are sending a pre-wedding invitation when all you really need to send is the wedding invitation. Why bother? The short answer is yes, you probably should. Most brides do. Here are some of the benefits of including Save the Dates in your wedding stationery suite.
Your wedding is like going to be the biggest party of your life. Your guests will bring the energy, joy and memories that will fill the rooms of your celebration. You want these people to come right? Then why not create a little anticipation. Save the Dates are mysterious because they're a big deal, but they don't give away much. Why not get people excited about your big day? It's pretty important.
Again, your wedding is a big deal. Your friends and family love you, and they don't want to let you down. Give them the best chance of being there by sending them a Save the Dates. This gives them lots of advanced notice so they can literally save the date on their calendars, and re-arrange any plans if they need to.
If you are jet setting to the tropics for your wedding, a Save the Dates is an absolute must. Your guests will need to do a fair amount of advanced planning, like book hotels, cars, flights. Extend them the kindness of letting them know you want them there as far as eight to nine months in advance. If the travel is a shorter distance, like another state, shorter notice (say six months) is fine.
Similar to destination weddings, if you're having a multi-day extravaganza, your guests will have a blast at your epic celebration, but they will need time to plan for it. They will need six to eight months advanced notice to book accommodation and ask for time off work, babysitting, and the like.
Save the Dates are sometimes kept as keepsake items. They are treasured in scrapbooks or memory boxes by your guests, and you may want to do the same. It's a small token that will hold a lot of special memories for your friends and family.
Whether to send Save the Dates or not is a personal decision. There are a lot of good reasons to send them. But you may not need to if you are having a small, local and you are fairly informal about the guest list.
